A Chinese antique daybed known as "Kang" or "Luohan bed", circa 19th century

This mid-19th century daybed from northern China features simple horse-shoe legs. The tightly ratttan top surface was hand-made of reeds in a refined and ancient technique, held in place by a thin layer of lacquer. Traditionally, a daybed such as this was not only a place to sleep, but also a gathering place to sit with others while sharing tea over conversation.
